Set of 8 Thonet S33 Leather and Chrome Chairs by Mart Stam
Mart Stam / Thonet / Austria
Set of 8 Thonet S33 leather and chrome chairs by Mart Stam. After seeing the first cantilever chairs in furniture history, artist Kurt Schwitters wrote in 1927, "Why four legs if two will suffice?" The two chairs S 33 and S 34 created an uproar at the Werkbund exhibit at Stuttgart's Weissenhof Estate. Mart Stam began experimenting with small diameter gas pipes in 1925, connecting them initially with standard pipe fittings used by plumbers. Stam went on to create cantilevered chairs that no longer stood on four legs, which became an important building block in the history of modern furniture design due to their formal restraint. More than simply designed interior design objects, his cantilever chairs S 33 and S 34 chairs were part of a larger revolutionary concept of a new attitude toward architecture In original condition with visible wear including heavy patina, consistent with its age and use.
